Engineering Requirements
System-Level Requirements:

The system should greatly reduce the workload required by an individual to grow a healthy plant start from seed.

The system shall provide the plant light, nutrients, air-flow, and tracks various data points the operator can utilize to improve growing conditions.

The system should be designed for residential use, and caters to individuals who plan their growing season by starting seeds indoors before transplanting outside once the dangers of frost have passed.

High-Level Functions and Requirements:
​
Dimensions
A. The device shall be portable.
B. The size shall be 24-in x 36-in x36-in (LxWxH).
C. The device shall weigh 30 lbs. (+/- 5 lbs.) when empty of soil and water, and weigh 60 lbs. (+/- 7.5 lbs.) when filled.
D. The planting trays shall be between 14-in x 5-in x 5-in (LxWxH) and 20-in x 10-in x 10-in (LxWxH).
Light
A. The device shall active the grow light in line with the schedule set by the user, defaulting to 18 hours on 6 hours off.
B. The grow lights shall supply a total power of 75 watts or 4000 lumens to provide optimal energy for photosynthesis.
Water
A. The device shall maintain soil moisture levels between 15-85% as measured by the moisture sensor.
B. The pump shall have a flow rate of at minimum 40GPH (Gallons Per Hour).
C. The water reservoirs shall be at minimum 2 gallons and maximum 4 gallons each.
D. The water reservoirs shall be located at the back of the system.
E. The fluid piping shall be partitioned from the electronic components in the top left compartment.
Data Collection
A. The device shall float the NPK sensor reliable between soil trays.
B. The system shall monitor system conditions through its various sensors (moisture, temperature and humidity, NPK).
C. The system shall communicate collected data with the user through a mounted LCD display.

Medium-Level Functions and Requirements:
​
Light
A. The device shall provide 15 or more watts per square foot of growing area.
Water
A. The device shall mix water soluble fertilizer in one of the two water tanks.
Cooling
A. The device shall activate the cooling fan when temperatures rise above 85° F.
B. The cooling fans shall provide a cumulative minimum of at least 2 cubic feet per minute of air flow.
Data Collection
​ A. The device shall activate the outputs dependents on conditional requirements set in the user app.
B. The device shall have an accompanying app to allow the user to exert control over the system and visualize data collected by the system.
C. The device shall send push notifications to the users phone through the app.
D. The device shall maintain nitrogen levels above 100mg/kg.
Low-Level Functions and Requirements:

Software
A. The device shall provide a detailed history of past data readings in the companion app.
B. The device will control and alter default system functionality through the companion app.
