Proposed Idea 1: Smart Fall Detection Device
Project Description
The described invention is a wearable fall detection device for the elderly, designed to be worn around the user's arm. Central to its operation is an Arduino microcontroller, which serves as the brain of the device, coordinating data processing and device functionality. It utilizes an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) to monitor the wearer’s movements and orientations, detecting potential falls through sudden changes and abrupt halts in motion.

Proposed Idea 2: At-Home Portable Soil Tester
Project Description
Our idea is a portable device meant for residential use where an at-home gardener can measure nutrient levels in their soil and receive instant results. Our proposed project will allow a user to take the machine into their back yard, stick multiple probes into their soil and get real time information on their soil nutrients (NPK), pH level, soil moisture, and environmental factors such as humidity, temperature, etc.
-
Handheld: The device should be portable so it can be carried throughout the garden to multiple test sites

-
Battery powered and Rechargeable: It should be battery powered and rechargeable so it can be taken into the field where outlets may not be easily accessible

-
LED Display: Necessary to inform the operator of the current readings

-
Measure NPK: NPK are the most important macronutrients for plant growth and the primary readings soil testers are looking for
-
Measure soil pH: Some plants require certain pH levels to grow, for example blueberries need acidic soil to thrive

-
Measure soil moisture: Help prevent over and under watering, one of the main problems beginner gardeners face

-
Mildly waterproof: As a field device it must be able to withstand the elements
Marketablility
There is already a large established market for soil testing around the globe, estimated at $5.7B USD in 2023 and expected to grow 4.6% annually to 2030.

Proposed Idea 3: Infrared Fire Detection System
Project Description
Central to this system are infrared sensors that detect the presence and direction of fire by monitoring the infrared radiation emitted by flames. Once a fire is detected, a servo motor is triggered, precisely directing the fire extinguishing component towards the heat source. The system employs a pressurized carbon dioxide (CO2) extinguisher to effectively suffocate the fire, eliminating it quickly without leaving residue or causing water damage.
-
Fire Detection: Utilizes infrared technology to monitor the environment for signs of fire by detecting abnormal heat patterns.

-
Automated Response: Automatically activates the servo motor to direct the extinguishing agent precisely at the source of the fire.

-
Fire Suppression: Quickly releases pressurized CO2 to extinguish the fire effectively and efficiently.
-
Emergency Communication: Sends real-time alerts to the user and communicates with emergency services to ensure rapid response.

-
User Control: Offers the user the ability to intervene and control the system manually if the situation is assessed as non-threatening or manageable.

Proposed Idea 4: Automated Grow Box
Project Description
Our proposed idea is a growbox that will allow the user a hands off growing experience. They will simply place the seed or plant in the box and with a few inputs to tell the system what they are growing and what state the plant is currently in (seed, seedling, or fruiting) the box will take care of the rest. Grow lights will be affixed to the top of the box to allow control of light levels and timing, soil moisture sensors will be attached to pumps to determine when the plant should be watered through drip irrigation, a fan will circulate air to inhibit the growth of fungal and bacterial diseases that commonly afflict plants, and the system will suggest what water soluble fertilizer/nutrients the user should add to the tank depending on the current stage of the plant.
-
Growing Chamber: Large enough to house medium size fruiting plants (2x2x3 LWH)

-
Temperature control: Certain plants cannot fruit when the temperature gets too high, an air vent will be used to disperse heat from the growing chamber

-
Light Control: Plants need a mixture of light and darkness dependent on what stage they are in

-
Humidity and Air Flow control: High humidity and lack of air flow is the leading cause of fungal and bacterial growth on plants
-
Soil Moisture detection: Sensor connected to drip irrigation system to let the system know the plant needs water

-
Fertilizer and Light Timing Suggestions: Plants require different macronutrient rations and light to darkness ratios dependent on the stage of growth. Through and LED display the box will recommend actions the user should take to optimize plant growth.
